DISCOVER, FEEL & DO - BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Black History Month is a time to reflect, learn and celebrate the richness of Black history and culture.

To help you narrow down how to celebrate this year, we’ve picked out one thing to discover, feel, and do this month. Each recommendation has been pulled from our partners at the Foundation, to give you truly meaningful ways to connect and celebrate.

DISCOVER: the stories “Hidden In Our Hair” with Zhara Elizabeth

Born and raised in Barbados and now based in London, Zhara Elizabeth’s art explores Black identity and heritage. In an exclusive interview, Zhara shares how art can uncover overlooked stories and how she’s done that through “Hidden in our Hair” – an innovative piece that uses UV-A light to reveal hidden paintings in photos of Black hairstyles, symbolising the layers of meaning, resilience they carry.

Hidden in Our Hair was showcased in Migration Museum’s first ever community curated exhibition: Inside/Outside And All In Between (2024-25). The museum is dedicated to capturing the full story of migration in the UK, showing how it shapes our communities, our nation, and our shared history.

FEEL: the power of young black voices with ‘Earned a Seat’

With Earned A Seat, young Bristol-based filmmaker Shaheim Minzie transformed what began as a song of solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement into a powerful musical and visual celebration of Black excellence, representation, and identity. Together the song and music video capture the experiences of a new generation and turns them into an anthem of strength and pride.

This recommendation comes from Babbasa, who believe that while talent is evenly distributed across the globe, opportunities are not. From mentorship to work experience, they help young people to build confidence, skills, networks and experiences that help them unlock their potential.
